Ultrafast Graphene Film Growth and AI-Assisted Rapid Characterization

Roll-to-roll chemical vapor deposition (R2R-CVD) is the core technological route for continuous, scalable production of graphene films, yet its industrialization has long been constrained by the inherent trade-off between growth rate and film quality. In atmospheric-pressure CVD, the thick boundary layer and low diffusion coefficient require a high CH₄ partial pressure to maintain sufficient carbon flux, but a high CH₄ partial pressure in turn intensifies gas-phase side reactions and introduces defects. Low-pressure CVD suppresses gas-phase reactions, but an excessively low absolute CH₄ partial pressure leaves the surface carbon concentration insufficient to sustain continuous growth. This report presents a systematic study of the pressure-dependent growth behavior of graphene in an industrial-scale R2R-CVD system, combined with two gas-atmosphere control strategies, namely Cu foil pre-oxidation and hydrogen-free precursor chemistry. This approach enables continuous monolayer graphene growth on Cu foil at meter-per-minute rates: monolayer coverage >90% with ID/IG < 5% at 1 m/min, and ~80% monolayer coverage with ID/IG ~20% at 2 m/min, together with uniformity verification over a 60 m long roll. This work clarifies the distinct roles of the CH₄ partial pressure, the total pressure, and the gas atmosphere in graphene CVD, and provides a scalable technological pathway toward industrial production of high-throughput, high-quality graphene. This report also introduces a rapid image-recognition-based strategy for evaluating the transfer completeness of graphene films, and further discusses the application of AI assistance in graphene film preparation.
